The other day while out doing errands, I passed by the San Gabriel Mission and decided to take a couple of pictures, now wish I had taken more. I live only about 10 minutes from it but have been so busy that I just didn't have the time to go back. I did not take this picture of the bells, it's a stock photo.
This is the cemetery which was built when the church was built back on September 8, 1771. A large cross stands in the center of the cemetery, first consecrated in 1778 then again in 1939.
This is the new church, inside it's so beautiful. I like to attend mass here.
This is the old church, still used for weddings and sometimes mass. Founded by Fathers Pedro Cambon and Angel Somera, it was the 4th Spanish Mission of 21 that were built.
We are all so busy right now with the holidays upon us but hope you had a chance to come and visit my blog and see this beautiful mission. They have a lovely gift shop and the grounds are so pretty. We have visited many of the missions but not all.

This does look like a beautiful place, and how lucky to be able to go to Mass in the new Church. Lovely photos for us to look at today, and I just can't believe how blue the sky is! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in California so I have seen many missions. This is lovely! I remember a mission near my house and the bell tower that looked very similar to your photo. The most beautiful mission I saw was in Riverside, California. We had our school prom there.

Such pretty photos of the mission, and so much history behind it. We went to Santa Barbara Mission over 30 years ago, and was beautiful back then. How special it is for you to attend mass there.
